03: Problem Statement, Research Questions and Research Objectives

Proposed Title: Strategies and Approaches to Teaching Literature in Urban and Rural School
Problem Statement
As educators, teachers need to know the right strategies and approaches in teaching literature. They need to be able to integrate different strategies and approaches in their teaching and learning session of literature so that the learning of literature can be fun and enjoyable for the students. However, they might face a few challenges in doing so. One of the challenges is that they are not aware of the strategies and approaches in order to integrate them in their teaching of literature. Kee as cited in Muthusamy, Syahaizad, Michael, Arumugam and Thayalan (2017) claims that educators are concerned that they do not know the right approaches to use in teaching literature component to the students in the English syllabus. If teachers themselves do not know what strategies that would help in learning literature, how can they implement the strategies in classroom to teach their students literature?

Furthermore, another issue is that literature component can be a tough topic for the students to learn to begin with. Students would have a hard time learning literature component such as poems, short stories, dramas and novels as some of the texts itself are written by foreign writers. Students in the non-urban area who are not familiar with foreign literature will face difficulties in learning them. When these students find that learning literature is hard and they do not know how to learn it in the first place, they would lose interest in the subject and they would not want to learn. However, the situations can be turned if these students are given the opportunities to learn literature in an easier way. This is where the role of teachers come in. Teachers need to figure out the right strategies and approaches and decide which is most appropriate to the students’ level of proficiency.

Research Questions
1.      What are the teaching strategies used by teachers in urban and rural schools in teaching literature?
2.      What are the teaching approaches used by teachers in urban and rural schools in teaching literature?
3.     Is there a difference between the teaching strategies and approaches used by teachers in urban and rural schools in teaching literature?

Research Objectives
1.      To find out the teaching strategies used by teachers in urban and rural schools in teaching literature.
2.     To find out the teaching approaches used by teachers in urban and rural schools in teaching literature?
3.     To determine the difference between the teaching strategies and approaches used by teachers in urban and rural schools in teaching literature?
